Observable

Computational notebooks for a generation that thinks in data.

LIVING DATA FIELD · MOVE CURSOR

The Company

Observable builds computational notebooks and data visualization tools for teams that want to think in data the way people think in language — visually, iteratively, in public. I joined as co-CEO in 2019, co-leading with Mike Bostock, the creator of D3.js.

D3 is the library that made it possible to make the visualizations that define how modern publications — the New York Times, the Financial Times, the Pudding — communicate with data. Observable is the platform we're building on top of that legacy: a place where analysts, designers, and engineers can collaborate on data work the same way software teams collaborate on code.

The Stakes

Data work is still siloed. Spreadsheets live one place, dashboards live another, the insight lives in someone's head, and the story gets told in a slide deck that nobody updates. We're trying to collapse that. One document, continuously live, collaboratively edited, beautiful by default.

"The goal is to make data literacy feel less like a language you have to learn and more like one you already speak."
